CINCINNATI (CBS) —New York City’s pharmaceutical-makers have been accused of lying about the drug’s effectiveness and lack of side effects.
Pharmaceutical companies have been accused of lying about the efficacy of Viagra, and some are even calling it a drug with no proven risks.
On Tuesday, the FDA ordered the manufacturers of Viagra and Cialis to immediately stop selling the drugs and stop taking them. According to the lawsuit filed in U. S. District Court in Cincinnati, the Food and Drug Administration said it was “in the public interest” to prescribe and sell such drugs that had no known serious side effects.
“This is not an appropriate response to a drug’s label,” said Michael D. Rosen, a former executive director of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, which represents the industry’s members.
The FDA ordered the makers of Cialis and Levitra to withdraw the products because they were not working as advertised.
“When the FDA asked the manufacturers for comment, a representative of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists responded by saying the products were not effective as advertised and that the companies had not been successful in selling the products to consumers,” the suit states.
The FDA also ordered the makers of Viagra and Levitra to stop selling them, which they said had “a significant risk of harm” and could cause heart attack or stroke.
The suit alleges that the makers of Viagra and Levitra marketed the drugs and sold them as being “pharmaceutical drugs that are not intended for the intended use as indicated” and “not safe”.
